How to Install Linux on the PS3
If you are interested in using your PS3 for more than just gaming, you may have considered trying to install a separate operating system on it. Linux is the simplest one to install on the console, as it is available for free online and has several different versions available depending on your needs.
The first step to Linux installation is to back up your saved files. You want to have all your important data backed up because the installation is going to require you to erase everything.
The next step is to format your hard drive. Go to your system settings tab, and then select format utility. When prompted to format your hard drive, select yes, and choose custom for the partition setting. This gives you 10 gigabytes to run Linux.
Then, you will need to insert the Linux software that you have downloaded and burned onto a CD (in ISO format). Back to system settings, then install other OS. After that, the system will do a brief scan and the Linux CD should be detected. When you select Enter, a blue screen will show up, much like a computer boot screen. It is important to note that during this part of the installation your controller will cease to function. You need a USB keyboard and mouse in order to continue with the installation.
Make sure you don’t unplug anything while the install is going on. If you do, the process will fail. When the installation is complete, take your Linux disc out. Remember to take the disc out or else your system will try to boot to it when you start it up again.
