Microsoft Windows is the most popular operating system (OS); thus, most web hosting companies cater to sites running on Windows, as expected. However, there is an increasing demand for hosts that can support websites running on other platforms such as Mac OS and Linux, just to name a few. For this article, we will focus on Linux web hosting.

Why do some people choose Linux web hosting? To start with, Linux is an open source OS designed after Unix. It means Linux is free, which is a fact that is easily a factor in some people’s choice of operating system. Aside from being free, Linux is also known to be very stable even in the midst of some heavy-duty multitasking. It’s also known to be flexible, powerful, and portable. The graphical user interface (GUI) looks great, too.

Whatever the reason may be, there’s no denying that more and more people are turning to Linux web hosting. If you’re comfortable with using Linux with Perl programming language, now is the right time to go for Linux web hosting. It has its place in mainstream, so any worries you may have about lack of suitable choices for Linux web hosting should be thrown out the window. There are a lot of affordable packages being marketed by web hosting companies for the Linux user.

Surprisingly, even if Windows is the most popular OS, Linux web hosting has more presence on the internet than Windows web hosting. The reason behind this is Linux’s open source nature. A lot of technological developments in web hosting are also open source. It’s easier for developers and programmers to experiment with different innovations when high fees and licenses are not part of the equation. Thus, Linux web hosting provides you with a lot of flexibility at almost no cost. When technologies update, you can go along with them without worrying about your budget because they are free.

Linux web hosting is also highly standardized because Linux, as an OS, is a standard platform. Thus, you can easily add to your website without too much hassle since everything is streamlined. You’ll appreciate this more as your website steadily and quickly grows. Long-term management with diligent maintenance is one of the most difficult things you need to do as a webmaster; luckily Linux web hosting can help in that aspect.

Take note, though, that there’s a downside to all the good stuff, and it’s up to you if it’s worth looking over when you finally choose Linux web hosting. Since Windows still dominates as the number one OS, Linux web hosting does not have a lot of technical support available for applications and languages that are based on Windows. Sure, you have a wide range of Linux-based applications and languages to choose from, but there are very useful ones that are Windows-based. You either don’t use them at all, or prepare yourself to encounter difficulties when you do.

Weigh your needs and wants before choosing Linux web hosting over Windows web hosting. Both have positive and negative aspects to them, and choosing what works better for your website is something only you can decide.

Of course if you are used to Microsoft Windows you are familiar with the concept of files. This familiarity means you won’t have to start from zero to learn about Linux files. However, you will have to relearn several concepts and techniques to work with files in the Linux environment, whether using Damn Small Linux or other versions. You can do several great things with Linux files that you can’t do easily or at all under Windows. This could be just one more reason to switch from Windows to Linux.

Files have unique names. This rule is not as simple as it may seem. There is no conflict between a hard disk file named pay12june and a file named pay12june on your removable USB flash drive. In fact, be sure to backup all your important files. Don’t worry if your hard drive file is erased or becomes corrupted and illegible, simply access the one on your flash drive. You could also have two files named pay12june on your hard drive in different directories. Directories, collections of directories and files, will be discussed in the next article in this series.

Linux distinguishes between lower-case and upper-case characters in file names. Microsoft Windows does not. For example, Linux treats pay12june and Pay12june as two different files, as different as pay12june and heighho. Windows users will have to adapt to this major difference. Even though I am a Linux fan I don’t see any advantage in the Linux way of naming files. Maybe I have spent too much time in the Windows environment.

File names should be relatively short. The allowed maximum is 255 characters but working with long file names is no fun and in fact is asking for trouble. Linux file names may not contain the character / which has a special meaning. To avoid misunderstanding don’t include special characters such as $ and & in your file names. Doing so could cause confusion and lead to hard-to-find errors. For the same reason don’t call your files by special Linux names such as etc.

Linux sometimes applies file extensions; common examples include .c to indicate a C-language program and .htm or .html to indicate one type of web page. Savvy Linux users often avoid coding the file extension but rely on the file directory to indicate the file type. Don’t give a Linux file a misleading file extension.

Use an editor to create or modify a text file. The old fashioned vi editor has been replaced by more powerful, user-friendly editors. Most versions of Linux come with several editors. Damn Small Linux, a popular version that runs under Windows, includes several editors such as Beaver that come quite close to being intuitive.

Linux provides an enormous variety of commands for processing files. Many of these commands are mnemonic; for example the command cp is used to copy files. Many commands include a wide variety of options. Consider the ls command, somewhat similar to the DIR command in the Windows environment. This seemingly simple command is quite rich and offers dozens and dozens of options many of which have no equivalent in the Windows environment.

Linux commands can be thought of as verbs. Just like most English sentences include more than a verb (go, jump) complete Linux commands contain the command itself and one or more objects. To copy a file you not only need to specify cp but also What and Where. For example, the command cp pay12june backuparea means copy the pay12june file into the backuparea directory.

Linux syntax (grammar rules) is quite strict and does take time to learn. But mastering Linux and associated technologies can lead to employment. The next step is mastering Linux directories.

When you bring home a new computer or update an old PC choosing a suitable operating system for your computer may be one critical decision you would have to make. Since operating system is software that allows computer to execute basic functions it is certainly the most vital part of your computer. Therefore, it is evident that you need to carry out a detailed study before you go ahead in choosing an operating system for your PC. If you are a novice it would be advisable to go forth for online operating system support.

In this article we would provide you a brief overview of the major Operating systems, which could possibly help you, make a wide decision.

The major three operating systems are:

Linux Operating System
Mac Operating System
Windows Operating System

Linux Operating System

Linux Operating System was developed by people from all over the world with a common goal of developing a free operating system. Its source code is open and free to anyone. Various programming teams are working for developing Linux Operating System for various purposes. Linux could be a best deal for businesses in which computer systems are required for basic functions. The negative point could be it is unable to use Windows programs. Another drawback is- Linux has no standard edition and since it is free you shall find no legal comebacks if you encounter a problem with the software.

Mac Operating System

Though this operating system is quite stable and works with a lot more programs as compared to Windows it does have its own disadvantages. For a person who has had more experience on Windows, switching to Mac interface would not be easy.

Besides, like Linux this operating system is unable to use Windows programs. Also, there are a few file types that are not easy to open. Another point would be files deleted in Mac OS are overwritten immediately which makes them unable to be recovered.

Windows Operating System

For many home and business users Windows Operating System is the only preferred operating system. Windows has many advantages and possesses almost universal 3rd party programming support. However, there are a large number of bugs discovered in windows and Windows Operating System is more susceptible to viruses as compared to the other systems.

Each operating system has its own pros and cons; the best way to choose one would be to analyse your needs and then go ahead in installing a suitable one. Online manuals could be some help in providing you Operating System Support; however you could use some live help through Online Operating System Support.

There are many organizations which offer you top rate Online Operating System Support service. Their experts would not only help in choosing a good operating system, they would also install the same and provide you result-oriented support whenever you need it.

Without question, the two most common web hosting platforms that are available are Windows and Linux. If you are in the position to choose one of these platforms for your web hosting needs, you might be considering Windows simply because it is something that you know and are already familiar with; however, you do not want to discount Linux quite so quickly. When you look at the platform, you will find that it offers a number of benefits. You might find that you change your mind once you see everything that it has to offer. The proceeding are just a few of the benefits that you can find from using Linux.

The most obvious of the benefits is the cost. Linux software is free, and developers will be able to have access to everything that the system has to offer without having to spend a fortune. Of course, there are far more benefits that simply the cost.

Security is important for all web developers and administrators, and the Linux hosting platform offers some of the best security possible. You will find that it is secure from a variety of threats, and with each successive release of Linux, they include more security features.

Linux also offers a huge amount of customization. Developers have the ability to alter and change code to meet their requirements. Your web developers will have the freedom to become more creative and add more options to your site.

Even though the program is free, you will still find customer support that is available 24hrs a day. It integrates with many different types of tools as well. One of the best benefits of Linux hosting is the reliability factor. You will find that you have less downtime with Linux than with a Windows host in most cases. It is easy to monitor and administer the system as well, which is something that you will find very beneficial as well as a cost saver.

With all of the features, as well as the fact that the software to get started is free, you can see why so many people are using it. If you have never used it before, you will find that there is a learning curve but it is not too steep. Since the software is free, you have nothing to lose if you want to give it a shot.

Linux has been something like monotony nowadays. Its fame makes it being the talk of the town – various Linux downloads, Linux programs, etc… And what’s great about this is – it’s all for free! However, free programs or software would always come to an end due to the rising number of users as well as the demands them constantly plea. There will really come a time that some of them will be priced just right for its effectiveness and usage. But that won’t tremble any of the existing and satisfied users of Linux because they already know how great it is to use such system.

Most of today’s Linux subscribers were actually using other operating systems and decided to transfer to Linux because of some annoying experiences. You can almost hear their murmurs whenever they talk about their previous systems. A complaint from a lady in her workplace have been heard telling that she got all fed up and totally annoyed with her current operating system and thinks of migrating to Linux. No worries at all because I think it’s just so easy to do it. Another thing is, switching to Linux can be very fast for her since she’s not using the software herself.

Beforehand, switching to Linux will require you to take a closer look around your software as well as to make some research about this new operating system. You should be aware of the software that are compatible with this new OS. Will your software run faster, or will be more user-friendly and effective once you transfer to this new system? Consider the advantages and disadvantages before you finally decide.

A large number of Linux software usually comes for free. And yes, they are indeed FREE! But are that free software doesn’t bother you at all? A colleague once mentioned that the more ‘free’ a software becomes, the more it is prone to get affected by some malicious programs. So before planning to use Linux, better watch out for these unwanted possibilities.

Another thing to consider is the commands that Linux has. Since it is new, there’s a possibility that some of its commands are different from your old OS. You have to get familiar with it first and then see to it that it has some sort of a familiar environment with your previous operating system. In that way, you won’t be caught something like grasping for breath because you have experienced a shock after suddenly switching to something you aren’t familiar with yet. So, it would be better to check everything out in order to get all things done – safely.

Anyhow, if you think you are ready enough to switch and try something new, then better opt for something that have positive feedbacks. Try to look at the bright side of your choice. Don’t worry too much about some adverse comments, for as long as you know that you, yourself can handle any problems that may occur (we could never really get rid of any unexpected failures). Consider the point that Linux has been very congenial to its users and is very friendly to the budget too. You won’t have to fret since some of its software are still offered for free (to download and to use as well).

I guess, the best thing to do primordially is to seek for valuable inputs about the Linux OS. Search and read a lot of reviews. Visit those sites that have favorable recommendations as well as some critics about this new operating system. Check out for software compatibilities and make sure that you’ve done checking the list of important software that you have – of which ones are and are not compatible with Linux. Better be ready before deciding to make a shift.

To finish this off, it will make sense to weigh all the odds and to consider the possibilities first before deciding to switch for Linux. A dissatisfied OS user (of another system) may opt for Linux to try its proficiency and effectiveness. He may go through a lot of new commands to learn and get familiar with, yet the important thing is, he is happy and comfortable with his choice. Well, the bottom lines for this is – if you are already fed up with what you currently have and is already annoyed of its performance, then why stick to that when you have greater options to choose from? So to speak, Linux may have been waiting for you all along.

Linux and Windows share many characteristics. For example, most people have little interest in knowing how they work. These operating systems make the computer available for the applications that people want to apply; such as running an Internet server, browsing the Internet, creating and accessing data bases, writing programs, playing music, or, or, or. These tasks are coordinated by the operating system and require specialized programs that drive hardware efficiently and correctly. We’ll talk about Linux’s closely integrated “friends” and compare them to the similar but oh so different Microsoft offerings.

The Linux group is called LAMP, an acronym standing for Linux, Apache, MySql, and PHP. There is no similar Microsoft acronym for their set of interacting products. Could that be a symptom of their relatively low level of integration? In contrast Linux is closely integrated with the other LAMP components. In a sense these companions grew up together. Improvements to one component are easily transmitted to the others. These programs are all Open Source meaning that the actual code for all components is readily available. When a problem such as a security breach occurs (don’t let anybody tell you there are no security breaches in Linux and friends) people work on the problem and may post corrections rapidly. Now let’s look at the other LAMP components.

Apache is a highly regarded web server. It has been the most popular web server on the Internet since April, 1996. Believe me, if Microsoft with its virtually unlimited resources cannot dislodge Apache from the top of the pack this software must be doing a lot of things right. Of the four LAMP components Apache is the one that non-specialists are least likely to try to learn. But if you want to play with it, guess how much it costs. You can download a version which will run under Windows but it is unlikely to contain the full functionality. At the time of this writing the Windows version of Apache has some problems concerning its cryptographic functions. Apache is undergoing constant development; its new features, security enhancements, and bug fixes will be available first on the Open Source (LAMP) version. And then filter down to the Windows version.

MySQL is the most popular Open Source Database Management System. The MySQL Community Server is free. The more powerful MySQL Enterprise Server starts at $595 per server per year, a very reasonable price for a commercial product. Microsoft’s competitive database management system is Microsoft SQL Server. Licensing of this software is fairly complicated and believe me, costs a lot, lot more than does MySQL Enterprise Server. Microsoft often makes you pay for purchasing the server and client software and then pay annual server licenses and client licenses for system access.

MySQL runs on a wide range of hardware in conjunction with various operating systems. You can guess from its name that Microsoft SQL Server runs only under Windows. Both of these database management products are constantly upgraded and many technical features that once were available only on SQL Server now run on MySQL. In the past SQL Server clearly surpassed MySQL for enterprise-level systems, while itself often losing out to Oracle or other database management systems. Today’s reality is more complicated and MySQL Enterprise Server manages many huge database systems.

Talking about size, we didn’t finish discussing LAMP components in this article. PHP is the subject of the next one in this series.

Are you facing “Read-only file system” error while booting your Linux computer? Does your system refuse to boot up in dual-boot configuration with Microsoft Windows operating system? When you encounter this behavior, system can not boot up and your data becomes inaccessible. At the same time, system may stop responding and you need to perform hard reboot. This overall behavior leads to significant data loss on your Linux system and need Linux Data Recovery to be sorted out.

In order to try fixing this issue on your Linux computer, identify the root cause of this problem. You may come across such circumstances due to any of the below reasons:

Damaged or corrupted file system

Improper unlock addresses for the LPC (Low Pin Count) flash chip

Hard drive failure

Linux automatically re-mounts the file system as read-only, if a hard drive failure takes place. In order to detect the affected system component and fix it, go through the underwritten steps:

To check error, integrity, and consistency of file system, unmount it first. If you can not unmount the file system, being root file system, force file system check at next reboot. If you find that file system is corrupted, hard drive formatting is required to rebuild or replace the damaged file system.

Run fsck command-line utility on the affected Linux hard drive. It is an in-built tool of Linux operating system, which lets you repair a number of issues with inode structure, data blocks, directory structures and more.

If hard drive failure is the problem, format hard drive, reinstall operating system, and restore data from the most recent backup.

Formatting is the process of creating a new copy of all the hard drive data structures, including file system. It removes every type of errors from the hard drive and make it as a new drive, deleting all the data, applications, and even operating system from it.

This process causes severe data loss, if the backup is not in place. In such conditions, Linux Recovery come for your rescue. You can carry out safe, quick, and easy Data Recovery Linux through third-party recovery applications.

Such tools are known as Linux Recovery Software. They use advanced scanning techniques to perform thorough scan of data loss affected hard drive and carry out absolute recovery in most of the logical data loss situations.

Stellar Phoenix Linux Data Recovery is the most effective and powerful application to retrieve lost Linux data. It recovers data from Ext4, Ext3, Ext2, FAT12, FAT16, and FAT32 file system volumes. The software works well with all major distributions of Linux operating system, including Red Hat, SUSE, Ubuntu, and Fedora.

A Linux distribution is also known as the GNU/Linux distribution by some. It is basically a family member of the Unix-like software distributions and these distributions are called “distros”. Linux kernel lies as the basis of these distributions. They contain a number of software applications comprising database applications, media players, spreadsheets and word processors. The Linux operating system consists of the Linux kernel along with a set of utilities and libraries from the GNU and the X Window System for graphic support.

Some Linux distributions may be optimized for size and may not come with X. These use compact alternatives to the GNU utilities, which may include dietlibc, uclibc or busybox. At present, there are more than 300 Linux distributions and many of them are in the active mode. This means that these distributions are being constantly studied, and revised to be improved. The Linux distributions are available in different forms because most of the kernels and supporting packages used are combination of open source and free software. They may take the form of a fully featured desktop or server operating system or can also be used in minimal environments. This is the reason why they are widely used in embedded systems and for things like booting from a floppy disk.

Actually, leaving aside the custom software aspect, the word distribution here simply means a specific assortment of some applications that are installed on top of a set of libraries, along with a version of the kernel. This is created in such a manner that the “out-of-the-box” capabilities are met with most of the requirements of its specific end-user base. There are many kinds of Linux distributions, such as community, corporation and others. The known ones including Fedora (Red Hat), Mandriva Linux, Ubuntu (Canonical Ltd.), and openSUSE (Novell) are backed commercially. The community distributors consist of Gentoo and Debian. The others are driven by neither a community nor a corporation. The most famous one is Slackware.

A basic Linux distribution for desktop consists of a Linux kernel, GNU libraries and tools, documentation, additional software, window manager, a window system and a desktop environment. Most of the software and sources that form a part of this operating system are free software and open source. This means that the users can compile the original code or can modify as per their own needs. Nevertheless, in some cases the software might not be available in the source code form.

Before the Linux distributions came into existence, a would-be Linux user had to be a Unix expert. A would-be user had to be aware of the details about the placement and configuration of the files in that system. This distribution has made the task of using Linux as the operating system easier.

Summary: Linux distribution works on the Linux kernel and some other software applications. With its emergence, it has become easier for the users to use it as an operating system on desktops and laptops. There are three types of distributions: community based, corporation based and others. Being made from the open source, the user can made certain modifications too.
